How do you create a fresh identity for a country’s most popular drink?

Caipirinha is Brazil's national cocktail, made with cachaça, sugar, and lime. As a caipirinha enthusiast, this was a passion project to create a contemporary brand of cachaça that is bright and playful. This is my ode to the Brazilians for distilling the nectar of the Gods, and it celebrates the landscape of Rio de Janeiro.

Brisa translates to breeze, but it’s also a cheeky word for feeling high. This is an easy breezy brand that belongs on the shelf of a beachfront bar.

brand toolkit

The colour palette for Brisa is inspired by the Brazilian flag, but also borrows from the forest, the ocean and the sun, which co-exist in Rio. The pattern is inspired by the tiles at Copacabana beach, and I wanted the icons to be asymmetric, perfectly imperfect and full of character. All the type is set in different weights of Avory Latin, and the use of italics energizes the brand.

packaging

After distilling cachaça from fresh sugarcane juice, the liquor can be sold unaged as well as aged. The former is labelled prata (silver) and the latter is labelled ouro (gold).

While experimenting with the packaging design, I printed a pattern on the back of the label and stuck it on the bottle. The liquid distorted the pattern into a psychedelic form; a happy accident that perfectly suited the brand.
